What’s your favourite animal?

I thought I’d introduce you all to one of my favourite animals, the axolotl, or as it’s sometimes known the Mexican salamander. Below is a picture of Aristotle who was my very first pet axolotl.

I think these creatures are fascinating, not only are they pretty unusual to look at, but they can regenerate and completely re-grow a limb! The axolotl also exhibits a phenomenon called neoteny, which means that unlike most amphibians who will undergo metamorphosis from egg to larva to adult, the axolotl remains in larval form throughout its entire life.

Unfortunately the axolotl is rarely found in the wild these days. Its native habitats of Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco in Mexico have been nearly all but destroyed, and the axolotl is listed by CITES as an endangered species. It is now mainly bred in captivity but they can actually make really good pets if you want to care for something a little out of the ordinary.

I’d be interested to know what your favourite animal is and why? Let me know by commenting below.
